Wine and gastronomy

Béziers is the historic capital of the Languedoc vineyards, which are the largest in the world in terms of surface area.  It is wine, allied to a way of life and a culture that has shaped our region, and in particular the hinterland.  The landscape of vines, bright green in summer, glowing red in autumn, was created by hard work and patience of multiple generations of people; their talent, passion and care during all the years past still shine through today.

A land of meetings

These vineyards, created by the Romans, are lived in and loved today by winemakers who are passionate about what they do and are true ambassadors for their domains.  There are many tasting cellars spread over the region! Go and visit them  -  you’ll discover their best wines and learn the art of wine-tasting.

A variety of bouquets

Today, there are six wines classed as “AOC” in the Béziers or “Biterrois” region -  Faugères, Saint-Chinian (where there are two vintages, Berlou and Roquebrun), Minervois, La Livinière, Pézenas and Languedoc.  There are also several quality local wines -  Thongue, Libron, Terrasses de Béziers, Caux  and Haute Vallée de l’Orb).

Delicious dishes

These  versatile wines will accompany shellfish from the Etang de Thau, fish from the Mediterranean and charcuterie from the High Languedoc, not to mention chestnuts, cherries, peaches, olives and goat’s or sheep cheese.  Come and discover combinations of dishes and wines that you’ve never tasted before  -  savour delicious Mediterranean cooking in one of the thousand restaurants in the region  -  or enjoy the simple pleasures of joining the locals at a traditional market in a village square.

Treasures to discover

The Biterrois has inherited an immensely varied architecture from its rich winemaking past.  There are so many places to see. For example, beautifully decorated town residences, mansions, wine co-operative cellars and private domains will enhance your historical knowledge as well as tantalize the eyes.
